CSR ACTIVITIES OCTOBER-NOVEMBER, 2014 – CHILDHOOD DISORDERS AWARENESS CLASS

The disturbing and increased incidents surrounding reactionary and violent approaches to child discipline propelled the Department of Psychiatry at Muthoot Medical Centre, Kozhencherry to conduct an awareness camp on the various childhood disorders not timely identified in children.

Although awareness on such disorders has been propagated well through literature and media, people, especially parents and teachers fail to realize that various behavioral problems can be attributed to the existence of such disorders amongst children.

In the preliminary awareness session, Ms.K Vidya Thankappan, Clinical Psychologist along with Ms.Nimmy Koshy, Medical Social Worker, were able to shed much light upon various childhood learning disorders as Pervasive Development Disorder, ADHD, Dyslexia and other related problems.

The eager crowd of parents along with their wards comprised a cross-section of the parent-child population from around 30 schools in and around Pathanamthitta District. The sessions which fuelled the interest of the parents were followed by interactions and individual counseling with the Psychiatry Team.

The efforts of the Department were well recognised and requests from various schools have come in to conduct similar such psychiatric as well as paediatric camps within the school campus itself.
