How to do PAN Verification in Few Easy Steps?

PAN or Permanent Account Number is a mandatory identification document that all taxpayers must possess. Furthermore, with the PAN card, several benefits and uses are involved as well. Some of these include payment of taxes, claiming tax benefits and returns, making hefty transactions, investing in stocks and mutual funds, and so on. It also helps during GST verification by PAN, tracking your PAN application and PAN card correction among others.

Thus, to avoid misuse of the PAN card details, it is important to verify your Pan card. The facility is also utilized by many financial institutions that employ third-party resources for PAN verification for applicants of financial products. The Income Tax Department has authorized NSDL to provide entities that are eligible to offer PAN Card verification services. Entities seeking to verify the PAN details of users can use the online PAN verification service by authorized entities, NSDL & UTIITSL.

Types of Online PAN Verification

There are several ways to verify one’s or someone’s PAN card details. Both individuals and NSDL registered/ authorized entities can seek to authenticate PAN details.

PAN Verification Online by NSDL registered/ authorized Entities

Screen-based PAN Card Verification: In this, the authorized entities can use the screen-based PAN Card verification method to verify at least 5 PAN Cards at the same time.

  • Step 1: Logon to the ‘e-Filing’ Portal https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal

  • Step 2: Click on the 'Verify Your PAN details' hyperlink from the 'Quick Links' Section.

  • Step 3: Enter the PAN, Full Name (As per PAN), and Date of Birth, and Choose the 'Status' as applicable.

  • Step 4: Enter the Captcha as in the image and click on 'Submit' to verify your PAN details.

File-based PAN Card Verification: This method is preferred by organizations such as banks, NBFCs, government agencies, etc. who need to authenticate a large amount of PAN card details.

  • Step 1: Logon to the ‘e-Filing’ Portal https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal.

  • Step 2: Upload the file as per the given instructions.

  • Step 3: Click on ‘Submit’

  • Step 4: PAN Card details will be generated within 24 hours.

It should be noted that the file containing the PAN details should be uploaded only in the prescribed format.

Application Programming Interface (API) based PAN Card Verification: An applicant can verify the PAN Card details on various verification sites by using a software application. Smartly designed API-based software can verify multiple PAN details at once. All the user needs to do is upload the PAN details on the software, and the results will be displayed immediately.

PAN Verification Online by Individual PAN Holders

The following ways are preferred by individuals looking to authenticate their PAN:

  • Using Name and Date of Birth

    • Step 1: Log in to the online income tax return filing portal https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal.

    • Step 2: Select the 'Verify Your PAN details' option from the 'Quick Links' menu on the homepage.

    • Step 3: Enter the PAN holder's name and date of birth as mentioned in the PAN records.

    • Step 4: Verify the captcha and click the 'Submit' button. The PAN verification details will then be displayed on the screen.


  • Using Aadhaar Number

    Here’s the step-by-step process to verify PAN details using an Aadhaar card.


    • Step 1: Log on to the online returns filing portal of the income tax department https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal.

    • Step 2: Click on 'Link Aadhaar' under the 'Quick Links' menu on the home page.

    • Step 3: On the resulting page, press 'Click Here to verify if the process for linking Aadhar card to PAN card has already been initiated.

    • Step 4: Continue by entering the Aadhar number and PAN number, and click on the 'View Aadhar Link Status'. The details will then be displayed on the screen.

  • Using PAN Number

    • Step 1: Visit the official Income Tax Department e-filing website https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal.

    • Step 2: Click on ‘Verify Your PAN Details.

    • Step 3: Enter all the details and click on ‘Continue’.

    • Step 4: Your PAN verification status will be displayed on the screen.


Things to Remember before Applying for Online Pan Verification

  • You must register online to use the Online PAN Verification service.

  • The online PAN verification service is available for one year and must be renewed every year for a fee.

  • The Government of India has authorized specific organizations to carry out bulk PAN verification processes.

  • Any organization/entity that has registered for the authority of online PAN verification can track the status of the application by using the acknowledgement number.
