What are the Documents Required for PAN Card Application?
PAN card is used by the government to track all financial transactions and tax-related activities of Indian citizens. All PAN cards have unique alphanumeric numbers which means that no two PAN Cards are the same. In essence, the Permanent Account Number (PAN) is used to gather all the tax-related information of the citizens of India. It consists of computer-generated alphanumeric numbers that are completely unique. Citizens of India can use Form 49a, also known as the PAN card application form, to apply for a new PAN card. Once done, you can visit the official website of the income tax department for checking the online status of your PAN card application.
Documents required for a PAN card application online
If you are planning to apply for a PAN card, then the first thing you need to do is gather the documents required for PAN card. These can be divided into three categories - proof of identity, proof of address, and proof of birth.
Documents related to the proof of identity:
- Voter ID card
- Passport
- Ration card with the applicant’s photo
- Driving license
- Aadhaar card
- Photo ID card (issued by the Central Government/State Government/ public sector undertaking).
- Pensioner card copy with the applicant’s photograph.
- An attested certificate with the applicant’s photo and bank account number.
Documents related to the proof of birth:
- Birth Certificate
- Matriculation Certificate from a recognized board
- Passport
- Driving license
- Aadhaar card
- Pension payment order
- Marriage Certificate
- Domicile Certificate (issued by Government of India or State Government).
- Photo identity card (issued by Government of India or State Government, Central Government undertaking or State Government undertaking).
- Affidavit recognising the DOB (signed before a magistrate)
- Documents related to the proof of address
Documents related to the proof of address:
- Electricity bills
- Broadband connection bills
- Landline bills
- Voter ID card
- Aadhaar card
- Driving license
- Passport
- Credit card statements
- Post office passbooks having the applicants’ address
- Bank account statements
- Domicile Certificate
- Accommodation allotment letter (issued by the Central or State Government of less than or 3 years old)
- Documents of property registration
How to correct your PAN Card information?
The government has made it mandatory for all citizens to link their PAN card and Aaadhaar card. If in case the information on your PAN card does not match your Aadhaar card, then you can place a request online to get it corrected. Use the same documents for PAN correction that you used at the time of applying for a new PAN card.
Here are the steps that you need to follow:
Steps to apply for PAN Card Update/Correction Online:
- Visit www.tin-nsdl.com, the official website of NSDL E-Governance.
- Under the Services Section, Click on “PAN”.
- Click “Apply” under the “Change/Correction in PAN Data” section.
- From the ‘Application Type’ dropdown menu, select ‘Changes or Correction in existing PAN data/Reprint of PAN Card (No changes in Existing PAN Data)’.
- From the ‘Category’ dropdown menu, select the correct category of the assessee, For example, if the PAN is registered in your name, select ‘Individual’ from the list.
- Enter your name, date of birth, email address, and mobile number.
- Fill the Captcha and click on “Submit”.
- Your request will be registered and a Token Number will be sent to the email ID provided by you. You can continue the process by clicking the button given below it.
- After you proceed, you will be redirected to the form – there are three options to submit your documents, click on “Submit scanned images through e-Sign on NSDL e-gov”.
- Fill in all the necessary details such as your father’s name, mother’s name (optional), and your Aadhaar number, and then click on ‘Next’.
- You will now be redirected to a new page where you can update your address.
- Upload all the necessary documents such as proof of address, proof of age, proof of identity and PAN.
- You need to sign the declaration and click “Submit”.
- You will be redirected to the payment page. Payment can be made through demand draft, net banking, and Credit card/Debit card.
- After the payment, an acknowledgement slip will be generated. The applicant should take a print of it and send it to the NSDL e-gov office along with the physical proof of documents. Also, affix two photographs in the space provided and sign across it. Write ‘Application for PAN Change’ on top of the envelope along with the acknowledgement number.
