Also known as a Permanent Account Number (PAN) , it was introduced by the Indian Government and is mandatory for individuals within the age group of 18 or above. It is a ten-digit alphanumeric number, that allows the linking of various documents such as payment of taxes, assessment, tax demand, tax arrears etc. A PAN card helps the income tax department identify your personal information and facilitate information relating to investment, availing loans and other business activities.

In short, a PAN card serves as the most important identification tool that is required for all kinds of financial transactions while maintaining transparency to evade tax fraud. A PAN card is also required while opening bank accounts, applying for credit cards and buying/selling properties.
If you are above the age of 18, make sure that you have a PAN card. If you already have one and forgot your PAN card number, which is likely due to not using it frequently. In such cases, do not possess another PAN card because it can result in a penalty of Rs. 10,000 as it is illegal to have more than one PAN card. How to Know Your PAN Card Number by E-mail?
- The first step is to compose a new email from your registered mail ID.
- Then a box will appear on the bottom right-hand side. You will see the "To" field, type tininfo@nsdl.co.in or utiitsl.gsd@utiitsl.com.
- Type "Request for PAN card number" in the subject line.
- Mention your name, date of birth and registered phone number in the body of the email.
- Then click on send and wait for a response from NSDL or UTIITSL.

How to Know Your PAN Card Number on the Income Tax Website?
You can access your PAN details, including your address if you are registered on the Income Tax Department e-filing website. Mentioned below are the steps to retrieve your PAN number.
- First of all, visit the Income Tax Department's e-filing website
- Log in to your account.
- Go to Profile settings” or “My account”.
- Lastly, you can see your PAN details like name, date of birth, gender, address and PAN number.
How to Know Your PAN Card Number by Toll-Free Number?
- Dial the toll-free number for PAN card inquiries: 1800-180-1961 (only for calls within India).
- Listen carefully to the interactive voice response (IVR) system provided and follow the instructions accordingly.
- Then select the option that says "Know Your PAN".
- Once you have entered your details as prompted by the IVR, the system will verify and provide your PAN card information.
How to Know Your PAN Card Number Through Mobile Application?
- If you are an Android user, you need to visit the Play Store and iOS users, need to visit their App Store and download the PAN Card mobile app.
- Right after the installation, you need to open the application and click Know your PAN card.
- Then you have to enter the required personal details. Remember that your contact information must be that which is registered.
- Then you need to proceed ahead by clicking on the Submit option.
- At the last stage, you will receive an OTP on your registered contact number. Complete the process by entering the OTP.
- Depending on the strength of your internet connection, you have to wait for the app to process your request. Once your details are retrieved, you can view your PAN card number and other details on your mobile screen.
